Unlike regions dependent on a single sector, this area blends technology, higher education, healthcare, manufacturing, and energy into a resilient job market. Fort Collins serves as the economic hub, but employers are spread across Larimer County and Weld County, which means your home search can cover a wide geographic range.

Most drives between communities run 15 to 30 minutes. Even the longest cross-region commutes, like Wellington to Johnstown or Berthoud to Greeley, typically stay under 45 minutes.

Interstate 25 is the main north-south artery connecting all of these towns. US Highway 34 connects Loveland to Greeley through a straight east-west shot. US Highway 287 runs through Fort Collins and Loveland, linking to Berthoud and Longmont to the south. Highway 392 connects Fort Collins to Windsor and continues east toward Greeley. The infrastructure is straightforward, and once you learn the handful of main roads, getting around feels easy.

Rush hour does exist, primarily on I-25 between Fort Collins and Loveland and near the Harmony Road interchange, but it is nothing like what you would experience in Denver or any major metro. Most people here describe their commute as the best part of their day compared to where they moved from.

Where Should I Live if I Work in Fort Collins?

If your job is at Colorado State University, Woodward, Broadcom, or anywhere within Fort Collins city limits, you have the most options. Living in Fort Collins proper puts you close to Old Town’s walkable restaurants, coffee shops, breweries, and Saturday farmers markets. If you want more space, Timnath is just east of Fort Collins along Harmony Road — a rapidly growing community with newer homes, excellent schools in the Poudre School District, and easy I-25 access. Wellington, about 15 minutes north, offers a small-town feel with lower price points and is increasingly popular with families.

For those who dream of acreage — room for horses, a big garden, maybe a few goats — the areas west of Fort Collins along Rist Canyon or near Horsetooth Reservoir offer that mountain-adjacent homestead lifestyle. Lory State Park, Devil’s Backbone, and the Poudre Canyon trailheads are all within easy reach, which is a major draw for people who want to hike or paddleboard after work.

Where Should I Live if I Work in Loveland or Berthoud?

Loveland has its own thriving employment base, particularly in healthcare with UCHealth and Banner, plus a growing arts and small business community. Living in Loveland itself gives you access to a charming downtown, Boyd Lake, and quick routes to both Rocky Mountain National Park and Estes Park via Highway 34. I grew up here, bought my first home in downtown Loveland in 2017, and can tell you firsthand that this city has a strong sense of community that newcomers feel immediately.

Berthoud, about ten minutes south of Loveland on Highway 287, has become one of the most popular choices for families and couples who want a quieter, more rural atmosphere without sacrificing convenience. You will find homes on larger lots, strong community events, and an easy commute north to Loveland or south toward Longmont and Boulder.

Where Should I Live if I Work in Windsor, Greeley, or the I-25 Corridor?

Windsor sits right along the I-25 corridor between Fort Collins and Greeley, making it ideal for commuters who need to reach either city. Vestas employees, in particular, find Windsor convenient. The town has invested heavily in parks, trails, and a walkable downtown area. Severance, just east of Windsor, is one of the fastest-growing communities in Weld County, offering newer construction and more affordable price points. Johnstown, a few miles south along I-25, provides similar value with easy access to both Northern Colorado employers and the Denver metro.

If your job is in Greeley — whether at the University of Northern Colorado, JBS, or one of the agricultural companies — you can absolutely live in Greeley itself for some of the most competitive home prices in the region. But many people who work in Greeley choose to live in Windsor or Evans and commute 15 to 20 minutes on Highway 34 or Highway 392.

What About Remote Workers and Hybrid Schedules?

A significant number of people relocating to Northern Colorado are remote or hybrid workers. If you only need to commute to Denver a few days a week, this region is incredibly appealing. Denver International Airport is roughly one hour from Fort Collins or Loveland, which also makes national or international travel straightforward. Pricing varies by community, property type, and lot size, but most out-of-state buyers I work with are pleasantly surprised at what their budget buys here compared to back home.
